Open-area Smoke Detection

Fire detection for buildings with open spaces – such as stadiums, airports, metro stations, shopping centers, hotels, entertainment venues, warehouses and production floors – presents unique challenges, and very early warning may not always be the priority. That's why Xtralis has developed Open-area Smoke Imaging Detection (OSID) for reliable, standard-sensitivity smoke detection for open spaces.

Xtralis is known for delivering fire detection solutions without compromise, and VESDA is the most reliable solution for very early warning smoke detection in any environment – including open areas. But when only standard sensitivity detection is required, OSID by Xtralis offers the most reliable and cost-effective solution for open spaces. It delivers superior performance to overcome all of the shortcomings inherent to other detection systems currently used in these applications such as beam, heat and flame detectors.

Fire Detection for Open Spaces without Compromise
OSID’s uncompromising performance is based on the patented use of digital imaging, dual-frequency beams, and smart algorithms. The novel use of dual light frequencies in an open-path device enables OSID to discriminate between real smoke and other objects, including insects, steam, condensation and dust, thus dramatically reducing false alarms. Unlike other dual wavelength detection technologies, OSID’s long path lengths more than compensate for reductions in early warning sensitivity, resulting in a robust, standard sensitivity detection system.

Installation and commissioning is simplified because exact alignment between the imager and emitter is not required. An imager can locate and lock in an emitter that is only roughly aligned thanks to the imager’s wide field of view. And because OSID uses a wide-angle imaging sensor, its sophisticated algorithms can compensate for vibrations and building movement. The option of a battery-powered emitter means that cabling and installation costs also are reduced significantly.
