Moscow Metro Deploys Xtralis VESDA Solution

Hemel Hempstead, England – August 3, 2009 – Xtralis, a leading provider of early warning fire detection and security solutions, today announced that its VESDA very early warning fire detection system has been successfully deployed to protect Russia’s Moscow Metro, which operates 12 lines and carries more than 6.8 million passengers daily.

Approximately 400 Xtralis VESDA systems have been designed and installed by Xtralis channel partner Ustela at some 40 Moscow Metro train stations. Deployed under escalators and passenger platforms and in cable tunnels and high-voltage generator and switch rooms, the Xtralis VESDA systems continuously sample air to provide the earliest possible warning of an impending fire hazard.

Xtralis VESDA provides the time to investigate an alarm and initiate an appropriate response to prevent injury, property damage or business disruption. And because Xtralis VESDA has the industry’s widest sensitivity range and multi-level warnings, even minute levels of smoke can be detected before a fire has time to escalate. The VESDA solution provides absolute detection in a wide array of environments – from coal mines to clean rooms and from rail tunnels and atriums to confined prison cells. VESDA's unique ability to detect the earliest presence of smoke in these varied applications makes it the solution of choice for today’s fire safety professionals.

Prior to Xtralis VESDA’s implementation, Moscow Metro primarily used conventional smoke detectors. However, the rapid transit system decided to look at early warning fire detection systems, and a successful first phase of VESDA implementations cemented Xtralis as Moscow Metro’s preferred air-sampling smoke detection (ASD) vendor because of its outstanding performance against other fire detection systems – particularly its reliability in a wide array of environments within the Moscow Metro system and its low cost of ownership and maintenance.

As of May 1, the Russian Government has added ASD to its national fire code (National Standard GOST R 53325-2009 and Set of Rules SP 5.13130.2009), enabling Russian organisations and businesses to select ASD as their primary means of fire detection/protection. This development, along with successes like those at Moscow Metro, makes Russia an important and emerging market for early warning, ASD solutions.

“Xtralis’ leadership in securing rail infrastructure around the world with our highly reliable early warning fire protection solutions is unsurpassed,” explains Samir Samhouri, Xtralis President and CEO. “And now that the Russian government has recognised the value of early warning fire detection with ASD, we look forward to working with many more infrastructure authorities, businesses and industries in Russia to protect their people, facilities and assets.”
