Vesda Smoke Detection Installed at New Heart & Lung Hospital

Hemel Hempstead - 28th February 2005 - Xtralis Pty Ltd is pleased to announce that its internationally acclaimed VESDA early warning smoke detection system was specified as the primary line of fire defence in Wolverhampton's new flagship Heart and Lung Centre at New Cross Hospital.

The system was designed and installed by leading fire security provider ADT Birmingham and has integrated seamlessly into the £60 million Heart and Lung Centre, which is the first purpose built specialist centre of its kind in the UK.

Spread over three floors, the centre has been specifically designed for diagnosing and treating coronary heart disease and lung conditions. Patients will come mainly from the Black Country, which has one of the highest rates of coronary heart disease in the country. It is anticipated that the centre will employ around 550 staff.

Further enhancing New Cross Hospital's profile as a centre of healthcare excellence, its advanced facilities boast the latest cardiothoracic technology and treatments.

ADT's Andrew Roberts collaborated with New Cross Hospital's head of Fire Services, Steven Lawley, to ensure that the system met his exacting specifications. Working to tight deadlines ADT deployed 26 VESDA VLS-200 LaserScanners and one VESDA VLC500RO LaserCompact, to provide the most reliable protection. The detectors have been discretely installed into the Centres' ceiling voids, allowing the distributed system to protect the entire facility including, the ground, first and second floors as well as its stunning reception Atrium. The system operates via 32 XYZ controllers and relay interfacing to offer unrivalled 24/7-fire defence.

Steven Lawley commented, "The system requires little maintenance once fully programmed and is easy to operate even for non-technical users. By virtue of its sensitivity and precise smoke detection, it dramatically reduces false alarms and call-outs and offers constant peace of mind."
